How the Ukraine war is developing, day by day by Neue Zürcher Zeitung

The war in Ukraine is different: The global public can follow the developments in real-time, unlike in past conflicts. Our interactive map is an attempt to map this new reality of war.

The map tracks the events of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since its beginning in February 2022. It is updated daily to show recent events, territorial gains and losses, satellite imagery, and the position of Russian troops. By clicking on the events, readers are presented with a more detailed description and an image of the event. A short text below the map summarises the main developments of the past few days.

The map was created by an interdisciplinary team of designers, data specialists, and developers. In addition, data journalists verify new information and add it to the map daily. Below the map, we explain the methodology behind the data and the design in depth.

The map is published on the main page of the Swiss daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung, often alongside other articles on the war. It lets readers stay up-to-date with the significant developments in Ukraine while providing them with detailed, on-the-ground information on demand.
