Crossing the Political Divide by Jeffrey Shaffer

Crossing the Political Divide examines the nuances of the political divide, looking at registered republicans and democrats in Cincinnati, Ohio. The story is much more complicated that a swing city in a swing state. We are divided with our neighbors and even within the same house.

This visualization shows the divide of downtown Cincinnati vs. the suburbs, a west side story and an east side story, and going deeper, a street dividing two distinct neighborhoods. Finally a house divided; homes that have one registered republican and one registered democrat.

The visualization finishes by showing that as divided as we are, 55% of the people in Cincinnati are unaffiliated with a political party. These are the voters that ultimately decide the election.

The Tableau Visualization is interactive, using the map titles to highlight the political parties to compare the stark differences.
