The Death Toll of Policing by Leonardo Nicoletti

In the midst of the #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd social movement, I became interested in visualizing and analyzing data related to police involved deaths in the United States. In using the unique Fatal Encounters (https://fatalencounters.org/) data-set, this visual essay has been an attempt at quantifying the "Death Toll" of policing in the United States. I chose to look at multiple dimensions (spatial, temporal, political) and use both simple explanatory visualizations (for example to show the difference in police-involved deaths between Republican and Democrat U.S. counties), and more exploratory visualizations (such as the beeswarm at the end of the piece) to give the reader an opportunity to find their own answers in the data.
