Songbird Connections by Alli Torban

Researchers studied how many times various North American Songbirds fed at the same feeder at the same time. I visualized this data by connecting the birds spotted feeding at the same time. The dots are sized by the number of times a bird was spotted eating with another bird. It's sorted to reduce the number of arc overlaps.

The resulting artistic network and styling are a nod to a bird feather. It's clear that one bird in particular really liked to dine with company!

Tools used: Rawgraphs to create the arc diagram, Adobe Illustrator to make the arcs tapered at the end, Procreate to add risograph-style texture, color, and some blending modes.
