After ogling The Pudding’s data story on ‘Gastronomic Borders in the US’, I wondered what the food preferences of Indians look like. The following data story is an effort to answer this question, and many more I stumbled upon along the way. I began by looking at restaurant data from multiple sources, which turned out to be woefully inadequate. Finally, I decided to scrape all restaurant listings on Zomato - an Indian restaurant search and discovery platform - for restaurant cuisines, locations, cost and ratings. This, by no means is a complete representation of Indian food habits - but it's a sufficiently large database to explore what urban Indians like to eat outside the home.
