The longest running study on wild elephants by Pierre Massat

The scientists at the Amboseli Trust for Elephant have studied the same population of elephants since 1972. They know most individuals by name, as well as their genealogy.

We built this visualization to show how the population has evolved, with precision at the individual level.

The main research results we aimed at showing in this work are :
1) the complex family dynamics that happened over type (slip and merge behaviour), and
2) that the population studied has grown over the period of the study (contrary to the general trend for African elephants elsewhere).
