You know when you see that mysteriously attractive person queuing in the supermarket, reading a book in the subway or simply walking around the city with this unexplainable glow and you just wish you had the guts to approach and you just… don’t?
Well, some call this a “missed connection”. Craigslist has a dedicated section to help people find those attractive strangers they’ve walked past, to find their missed momentums. It generates more than a thousand geo-located posts a week in some cities. In other words? Sweet, sweet data.
New York-based artist Ingrid Burrington has been tracking and analyzing NY’s missed connections data and used it to map a picture of loneliness in the city. The result is a delicate hand-draw map pinned with “hot spots” of loneliness.
